| At the first meeting held for this year the union was handed over to the newly appointed office bearers for the year 2009. President - Piyumavi Perera Secretary - Menuka Ruwanthi Treasurer - Dinushika weerawardana Co-ordination - Achithri Silva As our first official event, we organized the Sinhala union Essay competition for this year in February. It was successfully held with 130 students participating in three categories. This is absolutely the first time in the union’s history when so much participation and enthusiasm were seen. Inter-House Sinhala Debates 2009 The first round in the senior category was held on the 6th March 2009 as follows; Ambrose (proposing) Vs Rose De-Lima (opposing) Suzanne (proposing) Vs Sebastian (opposing) The topic for the day was “it is suitable to mix western music with Sri Lankan music.” The two debates concluded with Ambrose and Suzanne being winners. The seniors walk over was given to Carmel House this year. In the junior category, the Ambrose house debating team received the walkover this year. The first round was held on 13th March as follows; Sebastian (opposing) Vs Rose De-Lima (proposing) Suzanne (opposing) Vs Rose De-Lima (proposing) The topic for the day was “The assessment system is suitable to develop Sri Lanka’s school education.” Winning these debates were Rose De-Lima and Suzanne House. Our main event for this year will be the Sinhala Day-2009.We are planning to have it in September together with a month of Reading. Our other goals are to establish senior and junior debating teams. Quiz teams and Announcers team to represent our school in outside competitions. We will also be introducing a new Inter-House competition.
