Swimming

The Familian Swimming Squad is celebrating something very special this year. We are now completing 50 years of swimming. Our squad has evolved form a dew swimming to a bunch of enthusiastic talented young swimmers.

Our present coach, Mr.Ruwan Manawadu who is also the acclaimed coach of the Josephian Swimming Squad along with his assistant Mr. Titus conducts squad practices at the Vishaka Pool every Tuesdays and Thursdays. These practices help our swimmers not just to become better in the pool but also to grow as a team and as one unit. The senior swimmers as well as some of the Familian youngsters along with our primary swimming in-charge teacher go to Vishaka twice a week with much enthusiasm and excitement. Our beginners squad, which is growing every week goes to the Peterite Pool every Wednesday and is coached by our loyal coach, and who is known to our swimmers as “Mahi Sir.”

Our swimmers have performed quite well at this year’s national meets. Even though all the girls didn’t get places, their individual times were satisfactory. At the recently held public schools swimming meet, Christine Perera became champions in her age group becoming the first in the 800m and 400m free style and second in the 200m free style. Dulini Paranaviratne, Aneeka Heenagawage, Meliza Leitch and Romana Fernando clocked in times within the qualifying standards. Dinithi Perera clocked in time that placed her eighth and Dushanthi Weerasekera was placed in the top fifteen. This year’s swimming captain is Dinithi Perera and vice captain is Dushanthi Weerasekera.

Swimming is not a hard sport but one that needs commitment. It is a sport one can grow to love and enjoy. So, the Familian swimming in-charge Miss Gayamali, the coaches along with the Familian swimming squad urge all ‘up and coming’ Familian swimmers to join us and swim together in the Familian spirit.
